The Honorable Reince Priebus

Chairman of the National Republican Party

310 First Street, SE Washington, DC 20003

Dear Chairman Priebus:

I am writing to you regarding the public comments made by Governor John J. Sununu about Colin Powell’s endorsement of President Obama’s for re-election.

Governor Sununu has publicly responded to this endorsement by stating that the only reason for the Powell endorsement is because they are black men.  As a catholic priest and bishop I cannot understand the racist tone of the Governor’s statement and I am saddened that the leadership of the Republican Party has not condemned it as being unworthy of your party.

There has been no getting around the fact of the undercurrent of racism that has tainted this presidential election.  I am saddened that you have not invested the time, effort and the prestige of your office to confront this problem.

I invite you to do so now.

As a catholic priest and bishop, I am committed to the theological precepts of Social Justice and Peace and it is for this reason I am writing to you asking that you address racists comments and attitudes by members of your party.

I thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully Yours in Christ,

James Alan Wilkowski

Presiding Bishop for the Evangelical Catholic Church
